Dear Parents
On behalf of the staff and pupils of West Derby School, I would like to welcome you to our website, dedicated to the community of West Derby School. Our school is a Single Academy Trust boys’ school which welcomes girls into the Sixth Form.
West Derby School endeavours to nurture the caring, trusting and strong relationships between pupils, staff and families.
The core aim of our school comes from our tireless pursuit of achieving excellence in all aspects of school life. Our values determine the way in which we pursue that goal, namely through collective cooperation, mutual respect and courtesy.
When our children feel safe, happy and optimistic about their future they are more likely to succeed. Each member of the community of West Derby School plays an important role in creating these foundations for successful lives; personally, academically and professionally.
I am proud to be the Headteacher of West Derby School. Boys come to us from over forty primary schools throughout the city because parents know their son will not only be happy and safe here, but will also achieve his very best.
I hope you find our website helpful and that it conveys our values and ethos. Please feel free to contact us if you would like to discuss any aspect of our work.
Sian Graham
Headteacher
We are a popular and oversubscribed school with a very special and warm ethos. We offer a full range of academic and enrichment opportunities to all and we are very proud of our pupils’ achievements. All students are entered for an extensive range of examinations.
We want our students to be happy and successful, to be good citizens and to enjoy their years with us. Our ethos is founded upon the principles of right and wrong, and dignity and respect for all. All members of our community should be committed to these values and live up to them.
On arriving at West Derby School visitors immediately notice the calm, purposeful learning environment and the excellent relationships which are evident between students and staff. with this foundation, our students’ journey to becoming confident, independent and well-rounded adults has already begun.
It is because we are a confident community that we acknowledge that we can improve further and we will always seek strategies to work even more effectively, with all stakeholders, in this journey of continual improvement.
If your son is in Year 10 or 12, he will take part in a one-week work experience placement on the following dates: Year 10 June 17th to June 21st 2024. Year 12: June 24th to June 28th 2024 School have commissioned Elevate EBP to provide this opportunity and to ensure all health, safety and welfare requirements are met.
ABOUT WORK EXPERIENCE: Work Experience is non-vocational and gives young people a ‘taste’ of working life and an opportunity to practise important skills such as communication skills, working as part of a team and developing resilience. Whether your child plans to stay on at sixth form, go to college or get an apprenticeship – all pathways lead to work and the more experience they gain the more success they will have in the future.
NEXT STEPS: Complete the selection form using the link https://formbuilder.evolutive.co.uk/formsite/form/557834ac-ee85-4b41-8667-9852885565dc with your child to make choices of their preferred category of placement. Elevate EBP will then find them a placement based on one of these choices and within reasonable travel. Details of the work experience that has been secured for your child will be given to them approximately four weeks prior to placement.
If you prefer, you can arrange a placement for your child. You will need to approach an employer yourself and ask them to complete a ‘self-placement form’ which your child can get from their Head of Year 10: Mr Sharpe, or from the Heads of 6th Form: Mr Donohue and Mrs Williams, in school, once this electronic form has been fully completed and submitted.
