Vocabulary
We have teamed up with Lexonik and invested in their vocabulary package. Lexonik supports subject teaching of vocabulary across the curriculum. It allows us to implement a school wide approach to the teaching of literacy.
The most unique area of Lexonik Vocabulary is the facilitation of the explicit teaching of vocabulary. This lessens teacher variability and ensure sustainability and progress for the whole school.
Words are broken down at the syllable level, to aid reading accuracy, reading fluency and spelling. The subject specific definition is provided but crucially it also identifies the prefix, stem and suffix and then supplies the meanings of each part. This morphemic analysis of the words allows vocabulary to be explicitly taught and promotes, or provides opportunity for, cross curricular learning.
Vocabulary tiers
Our aim is to increase our pupils use of tier 2 vocabulary across reading, writing and spoken language.
WDS Vocabulary Mission
Along with all staff using Lexonik to help further embed higher level vocabulary in their teaching.
We are also looking at a whole school approaches such as this to help pupils to enhance their vocabulary choices and retain the new words they are introduced to.
Maybe you could also try this approach at home too.
Form time vocabulary
This year we have launched ‘Thesaurus Thursday’. This takes place during form time each Thursday and is yet another opportunity to boost vocabulary and encourage our pupils to think about their vocabulary choices.
We are using a thematically linked approach to vocabulary, and we have started with the theme of ‘Power and Control’
